“The only way to dispossess the heart of an old affection is by the expulsive power of a new one… It is only… when admitted into the number of God’s children, through faith in Jesus Christ, that the spirit of adoption is poured out on us–it is then that the heart, brought under the mastery of one great and predominant affection, is delivered from the tyranny of its former desires, and the only way that deliverance is possible… It is not enough…to hold out to the world the mirror of its own imperfections… Rather, try every legitimate method of finding access to your hearts for the love of Him who is greater than the world.”
Thomas Chalmer

I’m in a Bible study with several girls here in Chattanooga, most of whom go to North Shore. Monday was the first night back after taking the summer off, and–well, talk about an arrow in the heart. We’re doing Tim Keller’s Fruits of the Spirit study, and after half a lesson, I can highly recommend it. (The above quote was included in the study.)

I’ve been struggling recently with bitterness and self-pity. Truthfully, I suppose I am always struggling with these two things, sometimes it’s just more apparent than others. Like now. This quote really reminds me that it is not all about struggling to overcome my faults–it’s about letting Jesus overcome my heart, and then the rest will fall into place. I have a pretty easy time getting the whole lineup out of order, and then, well, chaos ensues.

In other news, today is my day off of work and I was planning on getting in a good long run. Unfortunately, it is pouring and the Internet is predicting solid, steady rain straight through next Monday. Whatever happened to crisp and clear fall days?rain
